Computer Vision Engineer

Soft Robotics’ engineers are building an ecosystem of robots, control systems, data and machine learning to enable the workplace of the future.

We are looking to hire a Computer Vision Engineer to participate in R&D and Product Development activities.  We are considering exceptional applicants at the Senior Engineer (SE), Principal Engineer (PE) and Senior Principal (SPE) levels, with the level determined by the applicant's skills and work experience.

The ideal candidate will be a professional software engineer with both industrial experience and academic training in computer vision. He/she will work on a variety of customer-focused projects throughout the product development life cycle, from initial proofs of concept through robust production-ready implementations. Successful candidates will have a passion for working on challenging, high-impact problems that involve both software and hardware development.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Invent computer vision algorithms for controlling robots in unstructured environments; a key challenge is understanding cluttered scenes in support of robotic grasping;

  • Implement computer vision algorithms with the high standard of robustness needed for deployment in a commercial setting;

  • Quantitatively evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of computer vision systems, both algorithms and video equipment;

  • Contribute to the technical road map, especially with regard to artificial intelligence and enabling technologies for robotic grasping;

  • Contribute more broadly to the team’s full-stack software development efforts;

  • Participate in software design and risk management activities;

  • Mentor junior engineers and interns/coops;

  • Other duties as required.

Experience/Education Requirements

Minimum qualifications (level will commensurate with experience):



  • Broad expertise using OpenCV for computer vision, especially for object detection and tracking;

  • Proficiency in either C/C++ or Python and demonstrable experience with both;

  • Comfortable developing software in a Linux environment;

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in the creation and maintenance of documentation;

  • Demonstrated track record of exceptional individual performance in a fast-paced environment;

  • Strong attention to details;

  • Ability to work independently but also thrives in highly integrated team environments.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in product development organizations, ideally working under a certified quality system;

  • Experience with machine learning, especially convolutional neural networks as applied to computer vision;

  • Experience with "best practices" such as issue tracking, static code checking, and automated testing;

  • Versatility in other disciplines (Mechanical and Electrical Engineering) or “Maker” experience is highly desired;

  • A passion for robotics is preferred!
