Senior Director of Hardware Development

We are looking to hire a Senior Director of Hardware Development to manage Electrical and Mechanical Engineering talent and to oversee all major hardware development activities across the organization.

The Senior Director of Hardware Development will report to the Chief Technology Officer and work closely with the rest of the TechOps leadership team to meet aggressive company objectives. He/she is expected to act as the lead robotics systems engineer, to guide all hardware and firmware development activities across the product life cycle (R&D, Advanced Development, Product Development, Continuous Improvement), and to develop, implement, and measure the effectiveness of best-practice processes, tools, and training/talent development to ensure that the hardware team continues to produce high-quality outcomes as the company rapidly scales to meet market demands.
 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, and retain a world-class team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Embedded Systems Engineers with experience in robotic system and industrial automation product development.

  • Manage team to perform R&D, Advanced Development, and Product Development in support of Integrated Product/Technology Roadmaps.

  • Work with other senior leaders to develop, implement, measure, and evolve product and technology development processes.

  • Work with CTO and product management team to identify future areas of technical development, assess technical feasibility/effort, execute new product imperatives and identify opportunities for product line extensions.

  • Ensure team effectively designs for safety, manufacturability, reliability and test in accordance with domestic and international standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Develop system test plans and protocols and perform system test and debug.

  • Perform design verification and validation.

  • Support manufacturing and test.

  • Participate in risk management and control: Perform Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

  • Participate in design reviews and document development activities per established product development processes.

  • Act as a company resource for knowledge on the latest trends in mechanical, electrical, and/or firmware design.

  • Manage departmental budget to include tools, equipment, and training.

  • Support design reviews for all phases of product development from concept to commercial release.

  • Ensure the completeness and quality of work packages and project deliverables.

  • Coordinate and align priorities and resources.

  • Other duties as required.


Experience/Education Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree within an engineering or scientific discipline.

  • 10 years of individual contribution in an engineering discipline.

  • 5 years of experience leading cross-discipline engineering teams.

  • Direct experience in product development preferred within a product company.

  • Experience with R&D, technology development, technology road mapping.

  • Experience taking products from concept through to launch including scale up and transfer to manufacturing.

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement and Quality Management techniques

  • Experience of managing risk and timeline on development projects with considerable novel content.

  • Excellent oral & written communication skills.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree within an engineering or scientific discipline.

  • 15 years or more of individual contribution in an engineering discipline.

  • 7 years of experience leading cross-discipline engineering teams.

  • 5 years or more of system development experience.

  • Experience leading the development of products for the industrial automation or other robotics markets.

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement and Quality Management techniques (i.e. Lean, DFSS).

  • Startup experience.
